SCRIPTURE 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
COMMENTARY While there is no doubt that we are a new creation in Christ, that does not mean that we have forsaken our free will, nor are we controlled. The Holy Spirit leads us, does not control us. We saw something similar related to the Holy Spirit coming on Saul. We read in 1 Samuel 10:6 “And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.” We all remember what the new man Saul did. There were times where he submitted to the Holy Spirit (ex. 1 Samuel 11:5). Yet later he disobeyed the Lord and in doing so, forsook something the Lord had planned to do for he and his family in 1 Samuel 13:13b “…for now would the Lord have established thy kingdom upon Israel forever.” The key here is that Saul was a new man even demonstrating his following of the leadership of the Holy Spirit, but this did not prevent Saul from disobeying the Lord and opposing the Holy Spirit. Something similar is true in Acts 5 where Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit, clearly something the Holy Spirit did not lead them to do.
