SCRIPTURE 1 Thessalonians 5:19 “Quench not the Spirit.”
COMMENTARY Paul warned the believers in the church at Thessalonica not to quench (Greek sbennymi), meaning “stifling or suppressing” the Holy Spirit, indicating that believers have the ability to do exactly that because of our free will. Believers who are not following the Holy Spirit cannot know or do the will of God, putting their eternal destiny in peril (Matthew 7:21). This is another passage contrary to the doctrine of eternal security especially as relates to being unable to resist the Holy Spirit as the basis of that doctrine.
